Choosing a programme
How do I know which programme to choose?+
Start with our short screening “Find your hormone programme”. There you answer questions about your symptoms and what weighs most on you. On the basis of your answers we recommend the programme that is most likely to suit you. If your symptoms point in several different directions, or you are still in doubt, you can choose a short clarifying conversation with us first.
Is the largest programme always the best?+
No. More tests are not necessarily better. The most important thing is that the investigations match the problem we are trying to understand. For many women Hormone Basic will be the right place to start. For men, Male Hormone & Energy will often be the natural starting point. The larger programmes are developed for more specific or complex problems.
Can men use Nordic Hormone Doc?+
Yes. We offer Male Hormone & Energy as our basic male hormone programme, as well as Hormone & Gut and Full Hormone Mapping for men whose symptom picture is more specific or complex.
I have many different symptoms. Should I choose Full Hormone Mapping?+
Not necessarily. The number of symptoms alone does not determine which programme is relevant. Full Hormone Mapping is developed especially for people who over a longer period have had a complex symptom picture from several areas and have often already been through investigations or treatments without receiving a satisfactory overall explanation.
Hormones and medication
Can I start a programme if I already use hormone treatment?+
Yes, in many cases. It is important that you state precisely which hormones you use, the dose, the form of administration and when you take them. Hormone treatment can affect test results, and you will therefore receive guidance on how your tests should be planned in relation to the treatment you already receive. You should not change or stop prescription treatment on your own in order to take a test.
Can I take part if I take thyroid medication?+
Yes. We need to know which preparation you take, the dose and the timing of your medication. It is an important part of the overall assessment of your symptoms and results.
Should I stop medication or supplements before my tests?+
It depends on the individual test and on what you take. You will receive guidance together with your test materials. Prescription medicine should not be stopped or changed without agreement with the doctor responsible for the treatment.
Can medical treatment become part of my plan?+
Yes. If your symptoms, your medical history and your results together indicate that medical treatment may be relevant, this can form part of your individual plan. Prescription treatment is always assessed and prescribed by a doctor and adapted to the individual. The aim is not only to describe your test results, but also to consider whether there is something we can concretely treat or adjust. Not everyone needs medicine, but if medical treatment is assessed as relevant and justifiable, it can be an active part of your programme.
The tests
Do I have to attend a laboratory to have samples taken?+
No. All the tests included in the programmes at Nordic Hormone Doc are home tests. You receive the test materials and carry out the samples yourself at home following the accompanying instructions. Once the samples are taken, you send them on for analysis.
Are the home tests difficult to perform?+
They are designed so that you can carry them out yourself at home. You receive instructions together with your test materials, explaining how and when the samples should be taken. Some test programmes require samples at specific times or over several days, so it is important to follow the instructions closely.
When should I book my review?+
Once you have carried out all your tests and sent the last test on, you book an appointment yourself in our online booking system. Book a 1-hour review approximately one month after the last test was sent off. That allows time for the laboratories to complete the analyses and for us to go through all your results together with your questionnaire and medical history before the conversation.
What happens if not all my tests are ready at the booked time?+
In most cases approximately one month will be sufficient. If a laboratory result is delayed contrary to expectation, it may be necessary to move the review so that we can assess the whole material together.
Can I buy individual tests without choosing a programme?+
No. Nordic Hormone Doc is built around complete clinical programmes and not as a webshop with individual laboratory tests. If your symptoms, your first results or the development in your programme show that there is a need to investigate an area more closely, we can recommend a supplementary or follow-up test. You always receive information about the purpose and price before an extra test is ordered.
DNA tests
Why do you use DNA tests?+
DNA tests can provide information about genetic variations in some of the body's biological and biochemical processes. This may include areas related to hormone metabolism, methylation, energy metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, histamine and the handling of nutrients. We use DNA as a supplement to the current picture and not as a standalone diagnosis.
Can a DNA test tell me why I have my symptoms?+
Not on its own. A genetic variant does not necessarily mean that it causes symptoms or disease. DNA tells us something about biological predispositions, while your current symptoms and other tests tell us more about what is going on in the body now. It is the combination of the information that can be clinically relevant.
Do my genes change during treatment?+
No. Your genetic variations do not change. What we can work with are some of the factors that influence how the body's various processes function in practice.
Special situations
Can I take a hormone programme if I am in menopause?+
Yes. Menopause is a very common reason for choosing a hormone programme at Nordic Hormone Doc. Hormone Basic will often be a relevant starting point, unless you also have another problem that makes one of the other programmes more suitable.
What if I want to become pregnant?+
It depends on your situation. If you especially want a better understanding of your cycle and possible ovulation, Cycle & Hormone Balance may be relevant. If you have been trying to conceive for a longer period, if you have had repeated pregnancy losses, or if you are already in fertility treatment, we recommend that you speak with us first. Our hormone programmes do not replace ordinary fertility investigation.
Can I take part if I have an autoimmune disease?+
Yes. When an autoimmune disease is already present, the overall picture often becomes more complex, because several biological and biochemical processes may be affected at once. Autoimmune diseases rarely arise on the basis of a single factor. Genetic disposition, immune regulation, inflammation, hormones, sleep, stress load, infections, gut environment and other influences can all play a role to varying degrees. An important part of our approach is therefore to try to place these areas in context and explain which mechanisms may be relevant in your particular situation. With autoimmune disease we also look at the fact that symptoms can often fluctuate over time. Periods of high load, poor sleep, illness, travel, major life changes, grief or other physical or mental stress can in some people help to worsen symptoms or trigger a flare-up. A programme is therefore not only about reacting when you feel worse. It is also about understanding your own patterns and becoming better at being one step ahead. An autoimmune diagnosis does not automatically mean that you need Full Hormone Mapping. But if the disease forms part of a long-standing and complex symptom picture with several affected areas, a broader programme may be relevant.
Review and follow-up
What happens at the review?+
Before the conversation we have gone through your test results, your questionnaire and your medical history. At the review we explain the most important findings and the connections we assess to be relevant for you. You also receive an individual proposal for which areas make most sense to prioritise. We emphasise that you not only learn what we recommend, but also understand why.
What can my individual plan contain?+
The plan depends on your situation. It may include diet and lifestyle, sleep and stress, vitamins, minerals and other supplements, hormonal measures, metabolism-related measures, further relevant investigations as well as prescription treatment, if this is assessed as relevant by a doctor. We try to prioritise the most important areas rather than changing everything at once.
What do we use the follow-ups for?+
All our hormone programmes include 4 follow-up consultations of 30 minutes each. At the follow-ups we look at how you have responded to the plan and whether anything needs adjusting. This may include changes in symptoms, treatment, supplements or the need for further checks. Some need relatively close follow-up at the beginning, while there can later be longer intervals between conversations.
What if my results show something that requires other medical investigation?+
If your symptoms or results give rise to suspicion of something that should be investigated in another way, we will tell you. This may mean that we recommend contact with your own doctor, a relevant specialist or other investigation. Nordic Hormone Doc should not replace necessary ordinary medical investigation.
What can I expect?
Can you guarantee that I will get better?+
No practitioner can promise or guarantee a particular treatment outcome. What we can promise is that we will take care to understand your situation, look at the relevant connections and help you as far as we can. How much can be changed depends on, among other things, the nature of the problem, how long the symptoms have persisted, any underlying disease and which factors can realistically be influenced. Our goal is to create the best and most well-founded starting point possible, prioritise the most important areas and follow the development together with you along the way.
How quickly can I expect a change?+
It varies from person to person. Some notice a change relatively quickly, sometimes within the first days or weeks. For others it takes 1–2 months before a clear difference begins to appear. With longer-standing or more complex problems we often assess the development over approximately 3 months, because that gives a better picture of whether the plan is on the right track. Some programmes require more time and several adjustments along the way. Follow-up is therefore an important part of our programmes. There we assess how you are responding and whether the plan needs to be adapted.
Scope and limits
Does Nordic Hormone Doc offer all forms of hormone treatment?+
No. Nordic Hormone Doc works with hormonal problems in women and men within the areas described in our programmes. We do not offer hormone treatment or medical follow-up in connection with gender transition. If a problem lies outside our area, we will as far as possible make you aware that you should seek assessment elsewhere.
Does your treatment replace my ordinary doctor?+
No, our approach does not replace acute or necessary conventional treatment. We function as a supplement with a focus on functional understanding, individual assessment and long-term support.
Is this acute treatment?+
No. We do not offer acute treatment. If you have acute or serious symptoms, you should contact your own doctor or the out-of-hours medical service.
Do you offer advice by email?+
No, we do not offer individual advice by email or telephone. All clinical contact takes place via booked consultations, where we have the time and calm to go into depth with your situation.
